Tony Prabowo : Opera GANDARI (2013/14. Revised 2015)
Descripción en Youtube:
GANDARI is Tony Prabowo’s latest opera after Kali, The King’s Witch and Tan Malaka. It was first staged on December 2014 at Teater Jakarta, Indonesia. This video is the revised version being presented on 16-17 October 2015 at Frankfurt LAB during Frankfurt Book Fair. Having been one of the most important protagonist of contemporary music in Indonesia, he has created a singular, multi-sensory total work of art together with international performers combining music with song, dance and recitations into the dance opera “GANDARI”. This retelling of an episode from the Indian Mahabharata Epic is based on a poem of the same name by renown intellectual and poet Goenawan Mohamad, who brilliantly perceived Gandari more of a concept rather than a figure on stage. Out of solidarity with her husband Destrarastra, who is blind from birth, Princess Gandari resolves to live her life blindfolded. This opera is the transcription of Gandari’s last five days before she finally close her eyes from the sensuous delight of the world out of despair. Prabowo and the artists tranformed “Gandari” into the present to create a haunting parable about the relationship between social norms and individual sensibility.
