The Russian pianist and composer Sergei Mikhailovich Lyapunov (1859-1924) is best-known for his set of 12 transcendental studies, dedicated to the memory of Liszt. He was an associate of Balakirev at the end of the 19th century, and Balakirev was a strong influence in his music - particularly the Caucasian-tinged thematic material. This piece - 'Twilight Song' - was written in 1904, and is stylistically very close to Balakirev . It comes across as a sort of Central Asian barcarolle. My apologies for the very slight glitch in the recording at 1' 56" - which can be blamed on the difficulty of dealing with the page turn in a lengthy seamless passage!
