Sophie Menter (1846-1918)
Germany
* Sophie was one of nine children of musician parents and was not the only great pianist in the family as her younger sister, Eugenie, also had a significant performing career.
* Sophie concertized throughout Europe as a solo pianist, as well as with her cellist husband, David Popper, whom she divorced in 1886
* Her close friendship with Liszt is well-known; and Tchaikovsky was also a friend
* Sophie was so revered as a pianist she was called "l'incarnation de Liszt" in Paris
* George Bernard Shaw said that she “produces an effect of magnificence which leaves Paderewski far behind,” favorably comparing her to the hugely popular Polish pianist of the day
* She was awarded honorary membership into the Royal Philharmonic Society
* In addition to composing and performing, Sophie taught for several years at the St. Petersburg Conservatory
