The unique feature of The New Jakarta Ensemble which established in July 1996 arises from a blend of Tony's western classical music background and the performer's traditional approach. Instead of writing a score, Tony must communicate his ideas verbally. The musicians are then free to interpret his original concept in their own "traditional" way. As a result of this collaborative method, the music that is created is nether 'western' nor 'traditional', but something "new", hence the name "New Jakarta Ensemble"
